Do you specialize in particular health issues (e.g. gender identity, trauma related depression and anxiety disorders,  autism spectrum disorders, etc. )?

Yes. To treat trauma, I completed EMDR level I and level II training as well as sensorimotor psychotherapy level I trauma training. I was trained as a systems therapist who specializes in partners/couples therapy. As a queer cisgender woman, I am committed to serving LGBTQI+ individuals and have pursued additional training in working with LGBTQI+ individuals. As a recovering perfectionist, I also am interested in the connection between perfectionism and depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. I spent 16 years in higher education as a faculty member, academic advisor, and psychotherapist and so have significant experience with many of the issues confronting folks in higher education institutions.

Please describe your level of experience (e.g. years,  training, etc. ) in working with Trans and Gender non-conforming  clients?

I have worked with trans* clients since graduating from my marriage and family therapy program in May 2013. Prior to becoming a therapist, I was a faculty member of education and affiliate faculty member of the LGBT Studies Program from 2008-2011. I received additional training at the Supporting Transgender and Gender-expansive Youth Conference in Madison, WI, as well as at the GLBT Community Center of Colorado.

Please describe your treatment approach ( e.g., cognitive behavioral, experiential , body-centered, DBT, etc. ).

Healing-centered, mindfulness-based, body-centered/sensorimotor-based, EMDR-informed, self-compassion/acceptance centered, justice-oriented. I gave a 12-minute TEDxCU talk in April 2018 that elaborates on my therapeutic approach:

Do you provide single case assessments ( for individuals not seeking ongoing psychotherapy )  and, as appropriate, letters of eligibility for hormone therapy and gender related surgeries?

If there have been cases in which you have determined that a client does not meet eligibility requirements  for hormone therapy or gender surgery,  what are the criteria under which you have denied a request for a letter ( or cases in which you anticipate that you would deny a request for a letter)?

Presently, I have not denied a request for a letter. I am deeply committed to honoring clients’ self-determination and so follow an informed consent model whenever possible.

Does a coexisting mental condition preclude providing the client with a letter?

No. I find that many mental health conditions arise from our interactions with unsupportive and even toxic environments. As a systems therapist, I’m interested in how to help people flourish and shift their interactions with environments that  limit them. Sometimes disorder diagnoses are helpful to people; many times, however, they pathologize individuals for what are, at their root, sociocultural issues.

Yes. Unless a client signs a release of information and explicitly specifies that they want me to discuss their trans* status with someone else, their trans* status remains  confidential.

If you have any concerns about the level of intake staff that could create an uncomfortable situation for Trans clients?  Is there someone the patient can contact to assist?

Yes. I work alone but do share office space with other therapists.  I would ask trans* clients to let me know if they encountered an uncomfortable or unsafe situation in the building so that I could assist.
